The Cost to Build an App - Is it Worth It?

We've been receiving quite a volume of calls and emails from some inquisitive entrepreneurs and companies.  For the most part the initial part of the conversation is centered around a single, almost universal, theme.

How much does it cost to build a mobile app?

I suppose the answer to this question depends on who you ask.  For ISBX, we generally start at around $20,000 for a single platform application.

Why does it cost so much?

ISBX Interviews Eddie Marks of Inedible Software
Inedible Software - Edward Marks

We love mobile apps.  We really do, and not just because it helps put food on the table, but because we truly believe it is an expanding market with limitless potential.  We are known for iphone app development… We've developed resource apps for law firms, engineering calculator apps, ecard apps, survey apps, television show apps, apps that make fart sounds, apps for celebrities, apps for big box retail brands, apps as a business tool for enterprises, and even apps that allow you put funny hats on people.  And yet, with all the apps we’ve produced, we’re occasionally blown away by a couple of developers that manage to trump our efforts, with just a single app.

Appbackr and Branded Research iOS App Pitch Night
Branded Research and Appbackr

Our buddies at Branded Research hosted an iOS App Pitch Night at their offices in Santa Monica, in cooperation with Palo Alto based, Appbackr.  The evening was filled with a lot of enthusiastic mobile app developers, a dozen boxes of pizza, and beer on tap.

Hello, we’re ISBX!
Hello, we’re ISBX!

I found this video we put together in the early days when we were still working out of E’s garage.  In fact the second half of the video is filmed in the same place we used to do our meetings.   We used it to pitch to a few seeders including Y-Combinator, but it never really got much air time.
